Welcome to this month’s edition of the Project Management Insights newsletter.

Five thoughts on project management for November 2023:

1) One of the biggest news over the past month was PMI’s announcement that they agreed to acquire the PMO Global Alliance, the world’s largest global community of PMO professionals. I have volunteered for PMOGA for the past couple of years and I find their offerings and resources to be useful for PMO leads. Kudos to Americo Pinto and his PMOGA team for this achievement!

2) PMI also released last month a white paper on Shaping the Future of Project Management with AI. I really like the chart showing how generative AI can move along the dimensions of task complexity and the degree of human intervention. Check out the web content and download the PDF.

3) I had several reader survey respondents ask for more information on case studies for troubled projects. I came across this blog article from Samir Mishra summarizing lessons learned from 12 complex projects. Great lessons to study. (As a side note – I used the Denver International Airport baggage system failure as the background for a leadership simulation card game I co-developed.)

4) David Williams and Tamsin Alli-Balogun share some practical advice on how to run a “pre-mortem” for your project. Think of the “pre-mortem” as a risk identification and analysis workshop for your projects.

5) This article from Harvard Business Review breaks down the intricacies of generative AI costs on an organization. As project leaders we should familiarize ourselves with the cost elements to truly understand the total cost of roll out when it comes to genAI.

One question for YOU to ponder:

  • Opportunities in life come through people. Who do you need to connect with to gain access to opportunities that you want?
